Developing your coaching practice: ICF mentor coaching

“If you are not willing to be a fool, you cannot become a master.” – Jordan B. Peterson

Mentor coaching enables you to achieve and demonstrate core competencies in the coaching room so you can gain or renew an ICF (International Coaching Federation) credential. You might be pursuing a credential as part of your career pivot masterplan, to boost your credibility with clients, or simply to support your continued professional development. Either way, you know mastery requires intentional practice. And you want to master coaching!

Who

Mentor coaching is for you if you are actively working towards gaining an ICF credential or renewing one you already hold. Our focus will specifically be on growing your awareness and capabilities in relation to the ICF core competencies and making sure you feel confident in your credential application.

I don’t have a specific ‘type’ of coach I work with. I love partnering with coaches with different niches, job titles, industries, coach training and long-term plans. That said, we’ll be a great match if some or all of these things apply to you:

You want to (re-)credential at ACC or PCC level. I’m a trained ACC and PCC assessor, I’m on the ICF mentor register and I’ve been credentialled at PCC level since 2021. So not only do I know what the ICF are looking for, but I’ve actually been through the process myself. You want to be in safe hands.

You’re a psychology geek. Whether you’re a formally trained psychologist or a self-taught enthusiast, you want to integrate evidence-based models, tools and theories into your coaching. You want to do this in a way that works for you and your clients as well as the ICF competencies.

You focus on transformational change with work or career issues. You’re already on board with the idea that a split between work and life is a myth; you know talking about one means talking about the other and that progress in both requires exploring core values, beliefs and identity. That said, your clients come to you to see work-based progress and you get your kicks from seeing them ace their career development.

You’re intrigued by creativity. You might want to use creative approaches and exercises with your clients, or you might want to take a creative approach to your own learning in preparation for your credential. Or both! Either way, you’re open to a bit of creativity, play, and experimentation.

You’re not a die-hard fan of a specific model or approach. Or you don’t want to be! Okay, so you might have some favourites, and you’ve found there are some things that fit better than others with your values, views or personal style but you don’t start every coaching session knowing what you’re going to say or do. You want to think about how different approaches fit with the ICF competencies so you can feel comfortable responding to your clients in the moment.

What

The ICF credential package gives you all the mentor coaching you need to be able to apply for a new ACC/PCC credential or to renew your ACC (10 hours of mentor coaching over a period of at least 3 months).

The programme consists of:

  • Kick-off: we get clear on your development goals and timelines, and identify any particular areas of focus
  • 5 competency and ethics deep dive sessions: spend time getting familiar with each competency and understand what behaviours clearly demonstrate each. Reflect on your coaching so far and think about what you want to do differently in the future
  • 3 feedback sessions: I’ll watch up to 3 x 30-minute recordings of one of your coaching sessions over the course of the programme and provide you with written feedback. We’ll also dedicate a session to talking through and reflecting on the feedback together
  • Wrap-up: reflect on what you’ve learned, make plans for your credential application, and think about your ongoing professional development

We’ll start by building a timeline that works for both of us and be really clear about the expectations we have for each other.

Why

Yes, you’ll get all the mentoring hours you need to apply for your ICF credential, but there’s more to it than that. You’ll also:

  • Increase your confidence. We’ll focus on leveraging what you’re really good at as well as upskilling in development areas. You will be able to own your strengths and know how to leverage them in your coaching.
  • Boost your growth and business. Intentional, focused practice leads to improvements in your coaching. And let’s face it, great coaching leads to recommendations and increased business.
  • Learn tools and techniques that work. You’ll walk away with an evidence-based toolkit you can draw from in the coaching room. And you’ll get the chance to experience some of them and know how to use them for your own development long after we’ve stopped working together. Win-win.

Let’s start by checking we’re on the same page with ways of working with a half hour ‘chemistry check’ call where we can get to know each other a bit more and talk about logistics. You don’t pay for this time and you’re under no obligation to go ahead if you’re not feeling it afterwards.
